Sibghatullah Arab, an Afghan judoka, faced an extraordinary journey to reach the Olympics. Fleeing Taliban-controlled Afghanistan in 2021, he traveled 6000km through five countries, including Iran and Greece, before finding refuge in Germany.
Settling in a refugee center in Kamen, Arab's athletic career took a pivotal turn when he joined a judo club in Monchengladbach, under Iranian-born coach Vahid Sarlak. Despite health challenges, he regained his strength and built a new life dedicated to his sport.
Arab's determination paid off with a seventh-place finish at the European Open in Madrid in 2023. Now, as a member of the IOC refugee team, he is set to compete at the Paris Olympics, driven by the support of his family still in Afghanistan and his unyielding resolve to succeed.
