Olympic Comeback: Female Boxers Reinstated After Compliance with Gender Eligibility Tests

Two female boxers who were disqualified at the 2023 world championships after failing gender eligibility tests have now complied with all rules to fight at the Paris Olympics, the IOC announced Monday.

Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan and Imane Khelif of Algeria, both competing in their second Summer Games, had previously missed out on medals at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The International Olympic Committee confirmed that all athletes participating in the boxing tournament for Paris 2024 are in compliance with competition, entry, and medical eligibility regulations.

Lin, a two-time world gold medalist, and Khelif, who won silver at the 2022 tournament, were removed from the 2023 world championships in New Delhi by the International Boxing Association. The IBA has faced a years-long dispute with the IOC over governance and funding issues. For the Paris Games, boxing officials have worked to minimize rule changes to ensure consistency for athletes. According to the IOC database, both boxers faced disqualifications at the 2023 championships due to hormonal level violations.
