England's stalwart batter, Joe Root, has reclaimed the number one spot in the latest ICC Test batters rankings, ending New Zealand's Kane Williamson's stay at the top. Root's remarkable performances in the three-match red-ball series against the West Indies have secured him this honor for the ninth time.
The 33-year-old accumulated 291 runs over three matches, with his crucial 87-run knock in the final Test in Birmingham being instrumental. This performance not only pushed him past Williamson but also allowed him to surpass Brian Lara's 11,953 runs, making Root the seventh-highest run-scorer in Test cricket with 12,207 runs.
Root, the leading run-scorer among active Test cricketers, first reached the number one position in 2015 and last held it in June 2023. His latest surge has pushed Williamson to second, with Babar Azam and Daryl Mitchell in third, Steven Smith fifth, and Rohit Sharma sixth. In addition, England captain Ben Stokes advanced to 30th in batting rankings, while pacers Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson improved their standings in the bowling rankings.
In T20I rankings, Indian cricketers benefited from their series win against Sri Lanka. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill showed significant progress, with Jaiswal moving to the fourth spot and Gill jumping 16 places to the 21st. Suryakumar Yadav stayed second in T20I batter rankings, while Ravi Bishnoi entered the top 10 for bowlers. In the all-rounder rankings, Australia's Marcus Stoinis rose to the top as Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga dropped to third.
