India is grappling with a difficult choice for their wicketkeeper-batsman position in the upcoming three-match one-day international series against Sri Lanka. Both Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are in contention, skipper Rohit Sharma revealed on Thursday. Pant, India's first-choice wicketkeeper, last played in an ODI in November 2022 before a serious car accident, but has since returned to the national team and participated in their victorious Twenty20 World Cup campaign in June.

Pant played in two of the three T20 matches against Sri Lanka last month, facing competition from the reliable KL Rahul, who excelled behind the stumps during the 2023 50-overs World Cup at home. 'It's a tough call. Both are quality players, you know the abilities of both. It's not easy to pick a team when you have players like that,' Rohit stated ahead of Friday's opening ODI in Colombo.

Despite stepping down from T20 captaincy, Rohit is expected to lead the 50-overs team in the upcoming Champions Trophy next year. The tournament will be another significant challenge for India's new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who started his tenure with a 3-0 T20 series win in Sri Lanka. 'We'll keep in mind what we want to achieve as a team but this is by no means preparation or practice. We want to play good cricket and get something out of the series,' Rohit said, emphasizing that their focus remains on maintaining the quality of cricket.
