Sri Lanka's all-rounder Dunith Wellalage garnered widespread acclaim for his exceptional performance against India in the first ODI. At the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Wellalage’s superb unbeaten 67 off 65 balls – highlighted by seven boundaries and two sixes – earned him the Player of the Match honor.

The left-arm spinner also excelled with the ball, claiming two wickets in his nine-over spell while conceding only 39 runs and delivering a crucial maiden over. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Wellalage attributed his success to studying Pathum Nissanka's batting technique and developing a strategic plan to pressure the Indian bowlers.

Sri Lanka, after opting to bat first, posted a total of 230/8 with significant contributions from Pathum Nissanka (56 from 75 balls) and Wellalage. India's chase, though initially strong with captain Rohit Sharma's explosive 58 off 47 balls, ended in a tie at 230. Key Indian performers included Axar Patel with 33 runs and two wickets, and KL Rahul, who added 31 runs.

Sri Lanka's bowlers, led by Wanindu Hasaranga and Charith Asalanka who both picked up three wickets, played pivotal roles in maintaining pressure on the Indian batting lineup, resulting in a gripping conclusion to the match. (ANI)
