Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov has called on the ATP Tour to enhance protections for players against fan abuse.
Shapovalov was defaulted from his quarter-final match at the Mubadala Citi DC Open after a verbal altercation with a spectator. Although the ATP later ruled that losing his ranking points and prize money was disproportionate, Shapovalov still faces a $36,400 fine for the incident.
Despite his relief at retaining the points and prize money, Shapovalov expressed dissatisfaction with the fine, arguing it comprises more than half of his earnings from the tournament. He emphasized the need for the ATP to implement better rules to shield players from abusive fans.
