Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat started his Paris Olympics journey with a commanding victory in the men's 57 kg freestyle. Sehrawat overpowered former European champion Vladimir Egorov with a 10-0 win, securing his place in the quarterfinals scheduled for 4:20 PM Thursday.
In women's wrestling, Anshu Malik faced a tough bout against USA's Helen Maroulis in the 57 kg category and was defeated 2-7. On the same day, World Championships medalist Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement after a disqualification in the women's 50 kg freestyle final. Phogat had previously defeated Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals but was disqualified in the final against the USA's Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for breaching the weight limit. Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and seeks to be awarded the silver medal, with a verdict expected on Thursday.
Nisha Dahiya's campaign in the women’s 68 kg category ended with a dramatic quarterfinal loss to North Korea's Pak Sol Gum. Dahiya, who led 8-2 at one point, suffered an injury that required medical timeouts, allowing Sol Gum to stage a comeback and win 10-8. Prior to the quarterfinals, Dahiya had defeated Tetiana Sova 6-4 in the round of 16 at the Champs de Mars Arena. This was Dahiya's debut at the Olympics.
