Australia's Olympic team, featuring gold medallists Jessica Fox, Kaylee McKeown, and Ariarne Titmus, arrived back in Sydney to a hero's welcome. Friends, family, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese were on hand to greet them.
On the Paris medals table, Australia finished fourth, besting long-time rival Britain and hosts France, with 18 gold medals, including four in a single day last week. This surpasses their past best performances at the Tokyo 2020 and Athens 2004 Olympics where they won 17 golds.
Australian athletes also bagged 19 silver and 16 bronze medals, marking their best performance at an overseas Games. Hundreds gathered at Sydney airport to cheer the athletes, who disembarked from the Qantas jet with medals draped around their necks.
Swimming star McKeown, who clinched two golds in Paris, expressed her delight at the warm reception: "It’s better than just getting off a plane and going straight to your car. It’s so nice to see all the support for us Aussies and the success that we have had."
Gold medal-winning sailor Matt Wearn, first off the plane, was greeted by Prime Minister Albanese, who praised the athletes: "We want you to know that what you have done is inspire us, is give us joy, give us excitement, and lifted up our whole nation due to your performance."
Australia's record-breaking achievements were splashed across media, reflecting the country's fervent sports culture. With Brisbane slated to host the Olympics in 2032, Australians are hopeful for even greater success, recalling their 16 golds in Sydney and 13 in Melbourne in past Games.
