Nathan Smith Eyes Test Debut After Stellar Domestic Season

Uncapped all-rounder Nathan Smith is setting his sights on a test debut this home summer after securing a New Zealand contract, driven by an exceptional domestic season.

The 26-year-old from Oamaru, Otago, clinched the title of New Zealand's domestic player of the year in March, leading the first class Plunket Shield competition with 33 wickets at an average of 17 for Wellington. Smith's contract is notable, given New Zealand Cricket's rare practice of awarding contracts to players without international experience.

Smith expressed his passion for cricket and adaptability across formats, stating, "I love cricket so all formats are great, they have their own little niches...I definitely think I can play all three formats."

With his promising record, including exceptional T20 performances, Smith is keen to justify New Zealand Cricket's faith in him. Another new contract awardee, Josh Clarkson, joins Smith, who replaces departing players like Devon Conway and Finn Allen. Smith's focus remains on amassing a successful career with New Zealand, as he eyes the number seven spot in the upcoming test series against England starting Nov. 28.
