Legendary Canadian marathon runner Jerome Drayton has died at the age of 80 in Toronto during knee surgery, according to reports from Cardinal Funeral Homes and Runners World magazine.

Drayton was born Peter Buniak in Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1956. Throughout his career, he broke records and won prestigious titles, including the 1977 Boston Marathon and the 1969 North American record time at the Motor City Marathon.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Drayton was a consultant for Ontario's Ministry of Youth, Culture and Recreation and left a lasting impact on the sport of marathon running in Canada.
