In Argentina, a significant legal battle is unfolding as eight medical professionals who were responsible for the care of football icon Diego Maradona have been charged with culpable homicide. This accusation stems from events surrounding Maradona's demise after undergoing brain surgery for a blood clot in 2020. If found guilty of charges akin to involuntary manslaughter, the accused men face potential prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years. The trial for seven individuals is slated to commence on March 11, with a separate jury trial for another nurse scheduled at a later date.

Maradona's death, a grievous loss for the world of soccer, triggered global mourning and incited family and fans to allocate blame. WHAT DOES THE TRIAL INVOLVE? Scheduled to take place in San Isidro, the trial promises to extend over four months with more than 100 witnesses, including doctors and family members, expected to testify. The prosecution plans to submit over 120,000 private messages and recordings as evidence of the alleged negligence by Maradona’s health caretakers, including his neurologist, psychiatrist, and nursing staff.

All accused deny “reckless” and “deficient” treatment allegations, portraying Maradona as a challenging patient struggling with long-term addictions. The charges, spurred by Maradona’s family, arise from perceived negligence revealed through leaked communications. Although Maradona's autopsy indicated a natural death by heart attack, and legal experts suggest a potential acquittal, this trial could redefine accountability in medical care for high-profile patients.
