AS Roma announced a strategic acquisition on Wednesday, securing Evan Ferguson from Brighton & Hove Albion on a loan deal, which includes an option to purchase. The signing marks a significant moment as Ferguson becomes the first Irish player to join the Italian powerhouse.
Born in Bettystown on October 19, 2004, Ferguson has made substantial strides in his career. His journey began at Bohemian FC before moving to Brighton in 2021, where he featured in the Premier League. His stint at Brighton included a loan to West Ham United in 2025, adding eight caps. On the international stage, he debuted for Ireland in November 2022, scoring four goals over 18 appearances and amassing a total of 103 appearances and 21 goals across club and national engagements.
The loan move has been positively received by Brighton's manager, Fabian Hurzeler, who acknowledged Ferguson's challenging period due to recurring injuries. Hurzeler noted, "Evan's pathway has been disrupted by injury issues, but he's returned in excellent shape, eager to play regularly. This opportunity is exciting in a strong league with European prospects." The manager expressed confidence in Ferguson's potential and hinted at close monitoring of his progress during this tenure.
