In a decisive moment during the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval, Australian captain Pat Cummins once again proved his prowess, dismissing English batter Joe Root for the 12th time in Test cricket. This record, achieved on Thursday, is the most dismissals of Root by any bowler, a feat that further solidified Cummins' reputation.

As Root was caught by Alex Carey for just 19 runs, England's aspirations of securing the coveted Ashes urn and clinching the series in Australia took a severe hit. Over 32 innings against Cummins, Root has managed 292 runs, with an average of 24.33, underscoring the challenge posed by the Australian bowler.

Despite ranking as the third-highest run-getter in the series with a best score of 138*, Root's performance has been inconsistent, crossing the 20-run threshold only once in five innings. By the end of the second session, England was 132/5, trailing the hosts by 239 runs, as Stokes and Smith remained unbeaten.

On the second day, England started at 59/3, trailing Australia by 312 after a powerful session where Mitchell Starc extended his fine form. Starc notched his second fifty of the series, but the Australian innings was curtailed at 371, due to Jofra Archer's effective bowling.

From an initial setback of 94/4, the Australians saw a significant revival thanks to Alex Carey's first Ashes hundred and Usman Khawaja's solid 82 runs, each in contrasting styles but equally impactful by the end of day one, leaving the match tense and finely poised.
