Amidst the timeless splendor of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo's iconic 'Last Judgment' is currently undergoing its first restoration in 30 years. This effort aims to restore the Renaissance masterpiece to its original vibrancy by removing decades of accumulated particles.
Specialists will meticulously work over the next three months to revive the hues and luminosity Michelangelo intended, as confirmed by the Vatican in a recent press release. Although the fresco will be veiled in scaffolding, the chapel will remain accessible to the public, offering a high-definition reproduction of the artwork.
The Sistine Chapel, known for hosting the secret papal conclave, attracts millions of visitors annually. While the 'Last Judgment' is temporarily hidden for restoration, other celebrated frescoes, including the famed 'The Creation of Adam,' remain on display to visitors.
