In a significant move for both clubs, Atletico Madrid announced the acquisition of Obed Vargas, a promising 20-year-old midfielder from the Seattle Sounders. Vargas, who was born in Alaska and later became a naturalized Mexican citizen, has been signed by the Spanish club in a deal lasting until 2030.
Vargas honed his skills in the youth ranks of the Sounders and made his Major League Soccer debut in 2021, quickly establishing himself as the third youngest player in the competition's history. Known for his maturity and dedication, Vargas was instrumental in the Sounders' victories in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions Cup and 2025 Leagues Cup.
While the financial specifics of the transfer remain confidential, Seattle Sounders general manager Craig Waibel emphasized the magnitude of this opportunity for Vargas. Atletico Madrid also strengthened their squad by acquiring Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman from Atalanta.
