NFL rescinds combine invitation to DE Ferguson

Louisiana Tech pass rusher Jaylon Ferguson is no longer invited to take part in the NFL Scouting Combine later this month, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. Ferguson is a possible first-round selection in April's NFL draft.

The league rescinded the invitation when a background check showed Ferguson was convicted of simple battery following an incident at a McDonald's during his freshman year at Louisiana Tech, per the report. The NFL will not allow players to participate at the combine if a background check shows a record of a felony or misdemeanor conviction involving violence.

Ferguson also was charged with public intoxication in college. Ferguson is the NCAA's all-time sack leader with 45, including 17.5 as a senior in 2018. The NCAA did not recognize sacks as an official statistic until 2000. The unofficial career leaders are Derrick Thomas (Alabama) and Tedy Bruschi (Arizona), who each had 52 sacks, according to their schools.

Teams already have begun to schedule personal visits with Ferguson, according to NFL Network. Defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons (Mississippi State) and wide receiver Preston Williams (Colorado State) also must sit out the combine because of prior convictions.
