Richard Carapaz's Road to Recovery: Missing Giro, Eyes on Tour de France
Olympic gold medalist Richard Carapaz will miss this year's Giro d'Italia due to ongoing recovery from surgery. The cyclist, 32, plans to refocus on the upcoming Tour de France. Expressing disappointment, Carapaz emphasized prioritizing his health over ambition as he aims to return stronger.
Former Olympic champion Richard Carapaz will not participate in this year's Giro d'Italia as he continues to recover from perineal surgery, announced his team, EF Education–EasyPost, on Wednesday. The 32-year-old Ecuadorean cyclist, who secured a gold medal in the road race at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, will instead direct his efforts towards the Tour de France, which starts on July 4 in Barcelona and concludes on July 26 in Paris.
Carapaz expressed his disappointment in a team statement, saying, "For me, it's a complete disappointment, because the Giro is a race I've always had a lot of affection for and looked forward to. Finding myself in this situation is frustrating because you put a lot of desire and time into it, but in the end I have to prioritize my health now and move forward."
Despite the setback, Carapaz remains optimistic, stating, "These are things you aren't prepared for. I will make the best of it and move forward. We are at the gates of the Tour." The Giro d'Italia is scheduled to run from May 8-31.
