World Cup Broadcast Rights Deadlock in India and China Raises Concerns
A deadlock over World Cup broadcast rights in India and unresolved decisions in China may prevent millions in the two countries from viewing the 2026 World Cup. While Reliance-Disney offered $20 million for rights in India, FIFA's expectations were much higher. China also has not confirmed any broadcasting deals yet.
Millions of soccer enthusiasts in India and China face uncertainty over watching the upcoming 2026 World Cup due to unresolved broadcasting agreements. In India, negotiations floundered as Reliance-Disney's $20 million bid fell short of FIFA's higher expectation, insiders informed Reuters.
With less than five weeks until the tournament commences on June 11, India and China remain without confirmed broadcast partners. FIFA stated it is engaged in ongoing, confidential discussions with the respective nations, in contrast to secured broadcasting deals across 175 other territories globally.
Broadcasting rights talks have become urgent, given India's 2.9% and China's 17.7% contributions to global TV reach during the 2022 World Cup. Reliance-Disney's move reflects cricket's dominant commercial value in India over soccer, especially with expected lower viewership due to match timings.
