Boxing Federation of India Faces Criticism Over Selection Processes
The Sports Authority of India suspended the Boxing Federation of India's assessment camp amid allegations of unfair selection practices. Interim talks have led to the BFI agreeing to modify criteria, aiming to resume the camp soon. Boxers, including Manoj Kumar, voiced concerns over transparency, mental pressure, and the opaque coach appointment process.
Boxing in India faces scrutiny after the Sports Authority of India (SAI) halted the Boxing Federation of India's (BFI) assessment camp due to alleged misconduct. Recent discussions have seen the BFI pledging changes in selection methods to resume activities.
Head coaches Santiago Nieva and CA Kuttappa discussed with SAI officials to ensure fair play. The BFI is yet to provide a written commitment to these new standards. These include the immediate declaration of bout results, aiming to mitigate allegations of bias. The change aims to resume India’s preparation for upcoming international competitions.
Former champion Manoj Kumar highlighted growing discomfort among boxers due to BFI's reliance on assessment-based selections. In a letter to the Sports Minister, he argued for more transparent, less pressurized evaluation methods. Concerns also extend to consistent selections of coaches, urging a review of the existing system.
