Eighteen students from Coimbatore have created history by securing gold medals at the Indo-Nepal International Silambam Championship 2026 held in Pokhara, Nepal. The event, which ran from May 8 to 12 at the Rangasala Stadium, featured competitions in traditional Silambam events such as Single Stick, Double Stick, Sword Spinning, Spear Throwing, Deer Horn Throwing, and Stick Fighting, spanning categories from Under-7 to Senior.

Gold medalist Adyan expressed immense pride in representing India, emphasizing Silambam's cultural significance as a sport rooted in Tamil Nadu. He attributed their success to coach Mohan and called for governmental recognition of the sport. Adyan highlighted the challenges faced and the need for wider international acknowledgment of Silambam's heritage.

Mohan's Academy, instrumental in training over 1,200 students in Silambam and athletics, has been pivotal in the students' achievements. The academy's involvement with organizations like the School Games and Activity Development Foundation and the Fit India Movement has facilitated their progress from district and state to national and international competitions. This latest victory sets the stage for further representation at the Asian Silambam Championship in Thailand.
