The 39-year-old sustained the injury during Denmark's Nations League defeat to Portugal, and despite efforts to recover, he has concluded, upon medical advice, that he cannot continue.

Schmeichel, who started his club career at Manchester City and had a notable tenure at Leicester City, announced his retirement as his contract with Celtic nears its end. His spell at Celtic was marked by 39 appearances this season, earning two Scottish Premiership titles and a League Cup.

Reflecting on his career, Schmeichel expressed no regret, grateful for numerous opportunities and memorable experiences, including winning the Premier League with Leicester and representing Denmark in two World Cups.
