New Zealand's cricket team has experienced a setback, dropping from second to fourth in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings following a 115-run loss to England in the opening Test at Lord's. The defeat was a significant blow to the Black Caps' aspirations of featuring in the WTC final slated for June 2027.

England delivered a commanding all-round performance despite weather disruptions and a tricky pitch. After being dismissed for a mere 140 in their first innings, England's bowlers restricted New Zealand to 113, eking out a narrow first-innings advantage. A comeback in their second innings, spearheaded by Emilio Gay's steady 57, allowed England to set a formidable target.

New Zealand's batsmen faltered throughout the Test. Rain reduced play on the third day, and on the fourth day resuming at 55 for five, their innings stumbled to a mere 138, with Glenn Phillips' resilient 44 offering some resistance. England's Ollie Robinson was pivotal, with a five-wicket haul and crucial lower-order runs, securing the victory for the hosts.

The win marked a morale boost for England post their 4-1 Ashes loss against Australia. Despite this victory, England is seventh in the WTC standings, while New Zealand's drop to fourth is a blow to their WTC final aspirations. Meanwhile, Australia solidifies its position atop the rankings with seven wins from eight matches.
