Abhishek Kumar Leads with Stellar Performance at PGTI NexGen Vijay Kumar Memorial

Abhishek Kumar of Panchkula took an early lead with a five-under 65 at the PGTI NexGen Vijay Kumar Memorial in Lucknow. Kumar's error-free round included five birdies, putting him ahead of competitors like Pawan Kumar and Rishi Kumar. Abhishek aims to top the NexGen Order of Merit.

Abhishek Kumar, a 24-year-old golfer from Panchkula, surged to the top of the leaderboard with a flawless five-under 65 in the inaugural round of the PGTI NexGen Vijay Kumar Memorial at Lucknow Golf Club. Starting from the fifth hole in the shotgun format, Kumar's round was highlighted by five birdies and zero bogeys, distinguishing himself as the early leader. Currently ranked fourth on the NexGen Order of Merit, he previously clinched victory in the season-opening DP World PGTI NexGen event in Faridabad this February.

Commenting on his performance, Kumar said, "Remaining bogey-free was crucial today. I managed to find 16 greens in regulation and saved par on the two holes where I missed. A pivotal moment was on the sixth hole, where I missed the green but still holed a 12-to-13-feet putt to maintain a clean card." His sights are set firmly on clinching the top spot on the NexGen Order of Merit, which promises an exemption on the main tour for 2027. "Finishing No. 1 strengthens your category on the main tour next season. Winning in Faridabad gave me a confidence boost, and I intend to build on that," he added.

In second place at three-under 67, Delhi's Pawan Kumar and local hopeful Rishi Kumar trailed by two shots. Pawan's round included six birdies counteracted by three bogeys. A regular since 2011, Pawan holds fond memories of golfing with Vijay Kumar in Lucknow during his early career days. "Vijay taught us invaluable lessons in practice routines and handling pressure," Pawan reminisced. Pawan aims to leverage his experience, having already secured his position for the 2026 PGTI season through Qualifying School earlier this year. The winner of the 2026 DP World PGTI NexGen Order of Merit is granted an exemption for the 2027 season.
