ISL-EPL joint venture readies new set of coaches

A football-based programme to ready new coaches and referees, run by the English Premier League and the British Council in association with the Indian Super League, has concluded. The week-long course took place in Ghansoli in Navi Mumbai with "Premier Skills" coaches educators Jez Weeks and Graham Robinson delivering the session, a media release said on Friday.

The aim of phase three of the joint venture was to provide 17 coaches and 30 referees from across India with the knowledge and skills to run their own training courses within their communities, the release said. The participants were from seven states across India, including four coaches from host state Maharashtra.

Pratap Singh Patwal, the Referee Development Officer of the All India Football Federation, praised the initiative. "Most of the referees who attended previous Premier Skills courses are now performing at a national level. The impact I witness is their psychologically positive approach to the game of football", he said.

"The course will help them understand the different aspects of refereeing in addition to the qualities they need to develop into a more complete official," he added..
