Report: Ex-Cy Young winner Peavy to retire
Former Cy Young Award winner and three-time All-Star Jake Peavy, who has not pitched in the majors since 2016, plans to retire, according to reports. Peavy, 37, last pitched for the San Francisco Giants in 2016 in what was his 15th season. According to a tweet by Bleacher Report's Scott Miller, Peavy "has
abandoned any comeback plans. Family responsibilities are keeping him at home in Mobile, Ala. He eventually would like to get involved with baseball again, just not sure of the timing or in what capacity." Peavy entered the league with the Padres in 2002 after being drafted in the 15th round of the MLB Draft three years earlier. The right-hander quickly emerged as a staff workhorse for San Diego by his second season (12-11 in 194 2/3 innings) and an ace by his third, when he led the National League with a minuscule 2.27 ERA and went 15-6.
He made his first All-Star team the following season, one of two selections he earned in seven-plus seasons in San Diego. After recording ERAs below 3.00 in four of his first seven MLB seasons, Peavy never quite matched the same production despite eight more seasons as a starter. Peavy later pitched for the Chicago White Sox from 2009-13, where he made the All-Star team again in 2012. The veteran was dealt to Boston in the summer of 2013 and later helped the Red Sox win a World Series title over St. Louis.
Peavy struggled with the Red Sox the following year, going 1-9 with a 4.72 ERA. He was dealt to San Francisco near the trading deadline in July, then turned his season around by going 6-4 with a 2.17 ERA down the stretch for the Giants en route to a second straight World Series title. Peavy pitched two more seasons with the Giants before his contract was not renewed at the end of the 2016 season. For his career, Peavy was 152-126 with a 3.63 ERA in 388 appearances, all but 11 as a starter. He had 2,207 strikeouts in 2,377 innings pitched.
