The Los Angeles Dodgers placed outfielder Alex Verdugo on the 10-day injured list Tuesday because of a right oblique strain. Verdugo had been scratched from Monday night's game due to what was described as back soreness.

Verdugo, 23, has blossomed this season, hitting .294 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs in 106 games, playing a bigger role than expected because of multiple injuries to free agent acquisition A.J. Pollock. The Dodgers recalled left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson and infielder Edwin Rios from Triple-A Oklahoma City. They sent right-hander Tony Gonsolin -- who pitched six scoreless inning against the St. Louis Cardinals in a spot start Monday -- to Oklahoma City.

Ferguson, 23, has pitched in 27 games for the Dodgers this season, with an 0-1 record and 5.88 ERA in 26 innings. Rios, a 25-year-old rookie, is hitting .267 in 15 at-bats with the Dodgers.
