Rangers' Chavez facing elbow surgery

Texas Rangers right-hander Jesse Chavez is facing the possibility of season-ending surgery to address a bone spur in his throwing elbow. Chavez, placed on the injured list Aug. 13 with a right elbow impingement, will return to Texas this week to be examined by Dr. Keith Meister, where a decision will be made. The 36-year-old would be expected to recover prior to the 2020 season.

"He would be 100 percent next year," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told reporters Saturday. "This would be a relatively minor deal, but it's bugging him enough to get it taken care of now." Texas signed Chavez to a two-year, $8 million contract last offseason. He is 3-5 with a 4.85 ERA in 48 games (nine starts) this year.
