The Milwaukee Brewers, who lost outfielder and reigning MVP Christian Yelich to a knee injury on Sept. 10, lost left fielder Ryan Braun in the second inning Friday in Colorado due to left calf discomfort. Braun exited in the middle of the second with the Brewers leading 1-0. He drove in the game's first run with a first-inning single, his 75th RBI of the season. He was replaced by Ben Gamel to start the bottom of the second.
The 35-year-old Braun, the 2011 National League MVP, began the night batting .284 with 22 home runs in 143 games. The Brewers have already clinched at least a wild-card playoff berth, and they began Friday trailing the St. Louis Cardinals by only one game in the chase for the NL Central title. They trailed the Washington Nationals by one game for the first wild card.
