Google is adding new improvements to the Google Drive Chat app to make it easier for users to collaborate on Google Docs, Sheets and Slides comments without leaving Chat.

With the latest update, you can:

  • Reply to and resolve comments in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides directly from Chat
  • Show more of the comment thread so you can have more context while replying
  • @mention your colleagues easily while replying to comments

The new features are now available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.

Admins can install the Drive app for Google Chat on behalf of users in their domain or they can specify whether their users can install the Drive app for Google Chat from the Google Workspace Marketplace.

If allowed by their admin, end users can install the Drive app for Google Chat using the "New chat" button in Google Chat.

Meanwhile, Google is rolling out enhancements to improve Google Drive usability on large screen Android devices. More specifically, you will now see a tappable folder hierarchy for your current view above the main doclist. This will help you keep track of where you are in Drive and easily navigate out of nested folders.

Secondly, per-file data columns will now show when a file was last modified and how much storage is used by each file. You will also notice a color palette that matches the Google Material Design 3 guidelines.

The new enhancements are now rolling out to Rapid Release domains while the Scheduled Release domains will start seeing them on November 27th, 2023. The features will be available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.

"Building upon improvements to the Google Workspace experience on large screen Android devices, we're excited to announce additional enhancements that bring our tablet experience more inline with our web experience," Google said.
