Nigeria Slaps Meta Platforms with $220 Million Fine Over Data Privacy Violations
Nigeria's competition watchdog fined Meta Platforms $220 million, accusing the company of violating local consumer, data protection, and privacy laws. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission said Meta improperly shared user data and mistreated Nigerian users compared to other jurisdictions.
Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has fined Meta Platforms $220 million for violating local consumer, data protection, and privacy laws on its Facebook and WhatsApp platforms.
The commission accused Meta of appropriating Nigerian users' data without consent, abusing its market dominance, and subjecting Nigerians to discriminatory treatment compared to other regions with similar regulations.
Meta has yet to comment on the allegations and the substantial fine imposed by Nigerian authorities.
