Students organised under the banner of NSUI on Wednesday staged a violent protest at the Kuvempu University here, demanding the release of scholarship and upgrading the hostel facilities. Raising slogans, ''Down down VC'', the members of the student wing of Congress took out a march on the university corridor. The demonstration escalated into a rampage as protestors destroyed the flower pots, furniture outside the VC's chamber and blackened the nameplates. A visibly shaken Vice Chancellor Sharath Ananthamurthy tried to pacify the agitating students, but to no avail. Speaking to reporters, Ananthamurthy said these students had approached him four days ago and had spoken to them. ''They had then submitted a memorandum. We solved some of their grievances, but what they did today by damaging university property is unacceptable. We don't even know that those who staged protests are students,'' the VC said. He warned of stringent action against those involved in the vandalism.
