Coinbase's second-quarter revenue exceeded Wall Street expectations on Thursday as trading volumes surged thanks to market optimism over reduced regulatory hurdles. The company's shares rose by 3% in after-hours trading.

Crypto markets have received a significant boost this year following the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of an exchange-traded fund to track the spot price of bitcoin and ether, ending nearly a decade of regulatory struggle.

CEO Brian Armstrong expressed optimism about future regulatory approaches, stating that the bipartisan rhetoric surrounding crypto has shifted. Since going public, he reiterated the need for clearer regulations.

The SEC and Coinbase have clashed over whether crypto tokens should be classified and regulated as securities. The SEC has accused the exchange of violating its rules, while Coinbase has criticized what it sees as regulatory overreach. The approval of spot bitcoin ETFs has brought traditional financial heavyweights like BlackRock and Fidelity into the digital assets market, lending greater credibility to the sector.

As a result, the total market capitalization of the sector has grown to approximately $2.36 trillion, driven by gains in bitcoin and ether. Coinbase's total transaction revenue surged 139% to $780.9 million in the second quarter.

Revenue from Coinbase's subscription and services unit, which includes businesses beyond trading, rose 79% to $599 million. Quarterly custodial fee revenue increased to $34.5 million, benefiting from inflows related to spot bitcoin ETFs.

The company's total revenue doubled to $1.45 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.4 billion, according to LSEG data. Coinbase reported a profit of 14 cents per share for the quarter, a stark contrast to the loss of 42 cents per share recorded a year earlier.
