Swiss Re Navigates Wildfire Claims Amid European Insurance Strain
Swiss Re reports wildfire claims in Los Angeles being less than $700 million, affecting its first quarter results. The fires led to over two dozen deaths and substantial property damage. Insurance claims for the event could reach $45 billion industry-wide, impacting multiple European reinsurers.
Swiss Re, a prominent reinsurance firm, announced on Thursday that claims arising from the wildfires in Los Angeles would amount to under $700 million. These events are set to influence the company's first quarter results. The fires, which ravaged an area larger than Paris, claimed over two dozen lives and wreaked havoc on more than 16,000 structures.
This projection by Swiss Re contrasts with that of Munich Re, a larger competitor, which estimated losses of around 1.2 billion euros for the same disaster. Analysts have indicated that the overall insurance claims across the industry might hit $45 billion. In response to these fires, the German reinsurer Hannover Re reported potential claims of 700 million euros.
According to Fitch, a credit ratings agency, despite European insurers reducing their exposure to California following fires in 2017 and 2018, they remain significantly affected by the 2025 calamities. As part of its 2024 earnings report, Swiss Re declared a 3.1% increase in net profit, totaling $3.24 billion, surpassing analysts' forecasts.
