The Department of Telecom (DoT) has announced the de-licensing of 500 megahertz of spectrum within the lower frequency range of the 6 GHz band. This strategic move is set to enhance Wi-Fi services across the nation significantly.
This decision comes after a draft Gazette Notification shared by the government six months prior, on May 16, 2025. According to the new notification, no license is needed to use or maintain wireless equipment within specific limits for indoor and very low power outdoor systems.
Prominent tech entities such as Apple, Amazon, and Cisco were among those advocating for the entire 1200 MHz range to be de-licensed for Wi-Fi, while Reliance Jio argues for its inclusion in spectrum auctions. This regulatory move results in a marked upgrade in connectivity capabilities, enriching India's wireless infrastructure and positioning it for future technological advancements.
