Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced a groundbreaking change with the introduction of parent-managed accounts, specifically designed for children under 13. This update aims to provide a safe messaging environment under strict parental supervision.
Historically, WhatsApp maintained a minimum age requirement of 13, with variations in different regions. However, after consultations with families and experts, WhatsApp is now offering features that allow parents or guardians to establish controlled accounts for pre-teens.
Parents will have control over the contact list, while end-to-end encryption ensures message privacy. The access and privacy settings will be secured with a parent PIN. This new feature is currently being introduced in phases.
