Tata Steel and USTB Forge Path Toward Low-Carbon Steelmaking

Tata Steel has entered a strategic partnership with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) to spearhead the development of low-carbon steelmaking technologies. This collaboration aims to tackle the pressing challenge of reducing carbon footprints in the steel industry.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed recently in Beijing, outlines a collaborative framework where research teams from Tata Steel, Tata Steel Research and Innovation Limited, and USTB will work together. Their focus will include scrap-based steelmaking, steel waste valorization, end-product performance, and carbon capture technologies.

Leveraging USTB's academic prowess and experimental facilities, the partnership seeks to pilot and potentially scale promising technologies for industrial use. Commenting on the collaboration, Subodh Pandey of Tata Steel emphasized its importance for global low-carbon steelmaking transition. USTB's Prof Shuqiang Jiao echoed this, highlighting their shared commitment to innovation and sustainable practices.
