On Friday, China's market regulator imposed fines totaling 3.6 billion yuan ($527.32 million) on seven leading e-commerce platforms for food delivery safety violations, according to an official statement.
The fined companies, including Pinduoduo, Meituan, JD.com, Douyin, and Taobao Shangou, were cited for inadequate consumer protection measures and insufficient verification of online food vendors' licenses.
Pinduoduo has accepted the fine and committed to business process improvements. The food delivery market in China continues to heat up as Alibaba and JD.com vie for dominance through promotions, leading to increased regulatory scrutiny.
