On Thursday night, a Blue Origin rocket exploded at its launch pad during an engine-firing test. The test was a precursor to a scheduled satellite launch next week. Despite the dramatic incident, no injuries were reported at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
The incident involved the New Glenn rocket, which had its third flight disrupted after previously experiencing an engine failure in April. The company is investigating the explosion's cause while preparing for a prototype lunar lander's moon mission slated for this fall. The mishap, however, does not pose a risk to NASA's Artemis program or upcoming rocket launches by other companies, according to officials.
Amid concerns from nearby residents following the explosion, emergency crews ensured that there were no threats from fumes. Space industry peers, including SpaceX's Elon Musk, offered support to Blue Origin. The New Glenn rocket, taller and more powerful than its predecessors, is central to Blue Origin's ambitious space exploration plans.
