The day is significant because of all the miseries of Ethiopia was during the reign of Derg Regime. May 28, 1991, is like a celebration of freedom.
It is a countrywide event. This day marks the independence of Ethiopia from the Derg Military rule in 1991. The event is one of the most significant festivals in Ethiopia.
As a tribute to martyrs and a number of moments across Addis Ababa, special speeches are delivered.
During this day, Politicians visit war monuments and encourage the countrymen to offer laurels to martyrs who lost their lives in the Red Terror and Civil War.
Initially, the Derg was popular following a successful triumph against Haile Selassie who came to power under the slogan of "Ethiopia First", "Land to the peasants" and "Democracy and Equality to all". The Derg became highly unpopular due to oppressive activities and illegal trade and mainly mass executions, which sent a shock wave across the country.
