Oskar Schlemmer: Google doodle marks 130th birth anniversary

Today Google Doodle marks the 130th anniversary of Schlemmer's birthday.

The figure in the black-and-white-red dress looks like a dancing robot and so does not remind of what you imagine under ballet. But that was precisely the intention of the painter and stage designer Oskar Schlemmer (1888-1943), who developed the so-called Triadic Ballet. Today Google Doodle marks the 130th anniversary of Schlemmer's birthday.

The costumes were special not only because of the look but from what they were made from. Schlemmer made them from wire, wood, leather, aluminium foil, paper and celluloid, and took up various geometric figures in the design. Saucer-shaped striped skirts and bell masks are reminiscent of tutus and diving masks.

With these costumes and abstract dance moves, the performers were more reminiscent of dance machines than human ballet dancers. At first reserved, the Triadic Ballet receives greater international attention before 1938.

The iconic Bauhaus staircase from 1931 is Oskar Schlemmer's most famous painting. One wonders why people, not man, not woman, climb the stairs of the building designed by Walter Gropius in Dessau.
