Wheat, rice basmati strengthen on increased offtake

Prices of wheat and basmati rice firmed up by upto Rs 200 per quintal at the wholesale grains market today on the back of increased offtake against tight stocks position on fall in supplies.

However, a few other bold grains slipped on muted demand from consuming industries.

Traders said besides increased offtake by flour mills, fall in arrivals from producing regions led to rising in wheat prices.

Rising demand from stockists against restricted supplies from growing regions helped rice basmati prices to trade higher, they said.

In the national capital, wheat dara (for mills) rose by Rs 10 to Rs 1,975-1,980 per quintal. Atta chakki delivery followed suit and traded higher by a similar margin to Rs 1,985-1,990 per 90 kg.

Rice basmati common and Pusa-1121 variety also advanced by Rs 200 and Rs 100 to Rs 7,700-7,800 and Rs 6,800-6,900 per quintal, respectively.

On the other hand, bajra and maize drifted lower by Rs 50 and Rs 20 to Rs 1,430-1,435 and Rs 1,380-1,385 per quintal, respectively.

Barley also shed Rs 10 at Rs 1,580-1,590 per quintal.
