US says less than 50 American citizens were aboard Air India flight diverted to Russia

Less than 50 U.S. citizens were aboard an Air India flight on Tuesday from Delhi to San Francisco that was diverted to Russia's Far East after their Boeing 777 plane developed engine trouble, the U.S. State Department said.

State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters on Wednesday the department is not aware of any outreach from the American citizens on board the flight to the U.S. embassy in Russia.
