Funding in proptech firms experienced a marginal 4 percent decline to USD 657 million in the last fiscal year, holding firm despite global economic uncertainties, Housing.com revealed in a recent report. The real estate platform highlighted the industry’s impressive resilience, having attracted a total of USD 4.6 billion in investments since 2010, growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 40 percent.
Dhruv Agarwala, Group CEO of Housing.com and PropTiger.com, commented on the sector's performance: ''Despite facing global economic challenges and a general downturn in fundraising across sectors over the last few years, the proptech sector has shown remarkable resilience.'' He noted that investment in proptech firms has continued to grow at a consistent CAGR of 40 percent since 2010.
In the 2023-24 financial year, Agarwala noted that the average deal size surged to a record USD 27 million, underscoring robust investor confidence in digital real estate. ''The real estate sector has significantly advanced in adopting innovative technologies over the past decade, especially in the last three years. This positive trend is expected to drive further advancements and efficiencies in the real estate market,'' Agarwala stated.
Housing.com's report further detailed that the proptech industry's funding experienced only a slight dip in 2023-24 with USD 657 million in investments, compared to USD 683 million in the previous year. This figure represents 90 percent of the record high of USD 730 million achieved in 2021-22. The shared economy (coworking and coliving segments) and construction technology emerged as leaders, capturing 55 percent and 23 percent of overall private investments in 2023-24, respectively, reflecting their pivotal roles in shaping the future of real estate.
Reloy founder and CEO Akhil Saraf, backed by HDFC Capital, highlighted the increased use of technologies in recent years, fueling significant investor interest in real estate startups. Additionally, Abhishek Tripathi, Co-founder of coliving firm Settl, noted that the real estate sector in India is experiencing robust demand for high-quality living spaces, driven by technological disruptions and digital transformations, which are expected to attract substantial investments. Housing.com's data encompass a range of investments including private equity, venture capital, and project-level investments among others.
