For the second day running, passengers faced significant hardship as several suburban trains were either canceled or short-terminated due to ongoing infrastructure upgrades at Sealdah station, officials reported on Saturday.

An Eastern Railway official stated that 80 local trains to and from this major Kolkata terminal were canceled on Saturday, mirroring the disruptions on Friday, to facilitate essential upgrade work.

During the upgrade period, 147 suburban trains were rescheduled to either short-terminate or short-originate to accommodate length extensions on five platforms for 12-coach EMU trains and an electronic interlocking system.

In a tragic incident unassociated with the upgrade, a man died after falling from a moving train near Titagarh station in the Sealdah division on Friday.

The Eastern Railway official emphasized that despite the disruptions, the upgrade work aims to enhance passenger mobility and convenience in the long term.

Even with banks closed on the second Saturday of the month, the strain on passengers was evident as other businesses remained operational, making the reduced number of trains inadequate to meet demand.

Out of Sealdah station's 21 platforms, five were non-operational to facilitate the upgrade works. In total, 806 trains are scheduled to run during the period of upgrade work.

Furthermore, four express trains are being routed to originate from and terminate at Kolkata station instead of Sealdah until Sunday. These include the Sealdah-Ajmer superfast express, Hate Bajare express, Sealdah-Balurghat express, and Sealdah-Asansol superfast express, according to the Eastern Railway official.
