SEZs to Shine Brighter with Solar Power Panels

The Commerce Ministry has advocated for the installation of solar power panels in SEZs under existing SEZ guidelines. This move follows requests from industry stakeholders and aims to enhance power generation. The guidelines, issued in 2016, allow such setups in non-processing areas with initial fiscal benefits.

The Commerce Ministry is pushing for the installation of solar power panels in Special Economic Zones (SEZs), aligning with existing power generation norms.

In a recent notice to SEZ Development Commissioners, the ministry highlighted multiple requests from EPCES and SEZ developers to consider solar power setups as capital goods for internal use.

After examining the matter with DGEP and CBIC, the ministry urges compliance with the 2016 guidelines, limiting solar plants to non-processing areas and granting fiscal benefits only during initial setup.
