CNN is eliminating around 100 jobs and plans to debut its first digital subscriptions before the year's end, aiming to reshape its business model.

In a memo to staff on Wednesday, CEO Mark Thompson disclosed that the layoffs constituted a small portion of the total workforce of approximately 3,500, noting that open roles were closed wherever possible to minimize layoffs.

Media organisations, including CNN, have faced challenges in growing audiences and revenue, prompting efforts to diversify their offerings.

Thompson revealed that CNN's digital strategy aims to be ambitious to attract the necessary audiences and revenue to sustain its journalistic capabilities and business success. The network will develop subscription-ready products featuring news, analysis, and context in new formats, with a focus on keeping users engaged on CNN.com's website.

Thompson emphasized a shift toward more video content, reflecting CNN's strength in video production and reporting.

The organisation will also develop lifestyle and feature content, providing new monetisation opportunities including sponsorships and direct-to-consumer subscriptions.

Additionally, CNN will explore the use of artificial intelligence to serve its audience better.

Thompson, who previously transformed The New York Times’ digital strategy, took over as CNN's head in October 2023, following the dismissal of predecessor Chris Licht.

In January, Thompson outlined a strategy for a drastic modernisation of the CNN.com website.
