South Africa has recently introduced its Draft Gas Master Plan (GMP), a pivotal policy document aimed at securing the country's energy supply through diversified gas sources from local and international markets. Released in April 2024, the GMP outlines strategic initiatives to meet projected demand, enhance infrastructure, and expand capacity in the gas sector.

Key to the GMP is the Gas Integrated Power Producer Procurement Program, which targets the addition of 2 GW of new generation capacity from land-based gas-fired power facilities. This program aligns with South Africa's broader goals of bolstering energy security and advancing industrialization nationwide.

To attract investment in South Africa's oil and gas sector, Minister of Minerals and Petroleum Gwede Mantashe will participate in the upcoming African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference, scheduled for November 4-8 in Cape Town. His presence underscores the government's commitment to promoting oil and gas development as part of its strategic energy initiatives.

Offshore exploration in South Africa's Orange Basin has garnered significant attention, especially with neighboring Namibia's recent billion-barrel discoveries. Major energy players like TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy have acquired stakes in South African Block 3B/4B, highlighting growing international interest in the region. Additionally, Eco Atlantic and its subsidiary Azinam South Africa have secured a substantial working interest in Block 1 of the Orange Basin, positioning themselves to explore one of the basin's largest untapped resources.

Onshore, South Africa's Karoo Basin holds substantial potential with estimated gas resources of up to 209 trillion cubic feet. Projects like Panoro Energy's exploration for helium and natural gas, and Kinetiko Energy's upcoming gas flow testing program in Mpumalanga province, underscore the country's commitment to harnessing its onshore gas reserves for power generation and industrial use.

Beyond exploration, South Africa is actively seeking partners to invest in energy infrastructure projects, including hydrogen production, power generation and transmission, refining, and distribution. Gas-to-power initiatives feature prominently in the country's Integrated Resource Plan 2023, aiming to add between 7.2 GW and 8.6 GW of new gas-fired capacity to support economic growth and electrification efforts.

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, emphasized the importance of investment in South Africa's energy sector to address the country's energy challenges and maximize its oil and gas reserves. He highlighted the need for increased investment to unlock the full potential of South Africa's energy resources.

Minister Mantashe's participation in the AEW: Invest in African Energy conference signifies a proactive approach by the Ministry of Minerals and Petroleum to engage with investors, technology providers, and regional stakeholders. The conference will serve as a platform to discuss investment opportunities, regulatory frameworks, and national energy priorities, furthering South Africa's ambitions in energy sector development.
