In response to an acute financial crisis, Kerala's Left government announced measures to cut unnecessary expenditure and prioritize essential budget areas for the current financial year.
Led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the state Cabinet decided to adjust the 2024-25 budget allocations to address economic constraints resulting from central policies. A ministerial sub-committee comprising ministers from Finance, Revenue, Industry, Law, Water Resources, Power, Forests, Local Self-Government, and Excise will manage these modifications.
Projects under consideration will undergo necessity reviews by a committee of key secretaries before approval. Although specific adjustments were not detailed, the goal is to prioritize public-impacting areas. This move follows the ruling CPI(M)-LDF's poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, prompting a thorough review of government actions.
The state Cabinet also aimed for better coordination among various departments for development projects, forming another ministerial sub-committee to ensure this.
