The Delhi government has initiated a trial run of its mohalla bus service, aiming to improve last-mile connectivity. The trial, which began on Monday on two routes, will last for a week, according to Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.
During a press conference, Gahlot shared that a total of 2,080 buses are planned under this scheme, with the full fleet expected by 2025. Of these, 1,040 will be operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and the remaining by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).
He added that the fare would match the existing AC buses of the Delhi government, and women could travel for free using Pink passes. 'The introduction of the mohalla bus service marks a significant step towards enhancing last-mile connectivity in our city,' Gahlot said.
The trial will provide crucial feedback to ensure the service meets the needs of Delhiites. Designed for congested areas, the buses offer a reliable and efficient transportation alternative. Routes are being finalized with the aid of various organizations, including IIT-Delhi. The trial runs on routes from Pradhan Enclave Pushta to Majlis Park Metro Station and Akshardham Metro Station to Mayur Vihar Phase-III Paper Market.
The green-painted buses, designed for easy identification, are equipped with six battery packs totaling 196KW, offering a range of over 200 km with a 45-minute charging time. They have 23 passenger seats and a standing capacity of 13, with six pink seats reserved for women passengers.
Currently, the Delhi government operates 100 buses acquired from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to strengthen last-mile connectivity. The maximum route length is 10 km. The government has also built 16 depots citywide for parking and maintenance of these buses.
