Top Officials to Testify at Rail Safety Hearing

Senior officials from the Federal Railroad Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and a U.S. pipeline safety agency are set to testify at a July 23 U.S. House subcommittee hearing on rail safety. This follows a significant rail safety reform legislation passed by the Senate Commerce Committee after a major derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.

This hearing comes in the wake of significant rail safety reform legislation passed by the Senate Commerce Committee last year. The reform was triggered by the catastrophic derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, in February 2023, which released over 1 million gallons of hazardous materials and pollutants, forcing residents to evacuate.

Last week, similar bipartisan legislation was introduced in the House, mirroring the Senate committee's bill, prompting further action on this critical issue.
